Rudder/Motor Connect

Hello everyone, I am trying to connect my rudder to my outboard. I've seen a lot here -- but mostly for the 260 and not the 26. (I have looked at Ron Mehringer's set-up on the project page) I have a question. It appears to me that the connection has to go aft in order for the pivot to be correct -- in front (which would be the easier connect) will have the rudder and the motor fighting each other (and that ain't pretty). Ok, if that is true, then any suggestions on connecting to the motor? Is the boat cover tough enough to handle it? With reenforcement? Any other ideas? (I have a Johnson 9.9). Thanks for your help (as always).

Well

Check out my rather cruddy sketch in the photo forum under the 260. I have the connection rod running from the front side of the rudder post to the front of the motor. Works perfectly!

But

But Mark (or anyone), isn't the rudder on the 260 different from the 26? I think you have the 260 -- right?? As I see the picture on the 260, there is a swivel forward of the rudder that pivots with the rudder. The 26 doesn't have that. So if I attach the connection at the forward part of the rudder the pivot is wrong. I am looking at the drawing, but not quite sure I get it -- I will take it to the boat tomorrow and see if it can make sense.

E Z steer

Just call E Z steer and advise which boat as they have the steering connector system for the 26 and 260 as it may appear that it would be difficult to make one as most go that direction.

Check their catalog, also. They have a cheap, adjustable rod with ball, pivot ends to tie trolling motors to the big motors. The ezee stear is better quality. In either case, your best bet is to get a bracket made that will attach on the top, rear of your rudder and connect it to the rear of your motor cover. I've got a Tohatsu 8hp and it is plenty strong enough. As you can tell from your own moter, there is little torque when it is running so the connector doesn't have to be that strong. In most cases, you will have to remove the rod to raise the motor. I've put a lanyard on mine to keep from dropping it in the drink.
