My rudder on my new used Cat 27 looks bulky and inefficient. The ends are quite bulky, rather than a nice tapper to give the rudder that streamlined look. My Cat 27 is a 75; were the original rudders rather bulky on these boats? Does changing the rudder out enhance performance. I will say the boat is incredibly sensitive to steer when coming in to the home slip at one knot. However going in reverse is an exercise in "gambler tillering" - which way will the boat go? Is a new rudder worth it?

You're right

The Cat 27 rudder is a little ungainly. An there is no "early" or "late model" design, they are all the same. The rudder works OK going forward, but is a bear in reverse, especially if you have an inboard. There are a couple of companies that manufacture replacement rudders for the 27, Booth in Canada being the one heard most often - about $600-700 as I recall. Check Judy B's website at the link. She replaced her rudder, because it was too much for her to handle.

What have others experienced

What have others experienced after trading out the old rudder for a new one. Was performance enhanced in reverse with a better rudder?

Another rudder source

You may also wish to check out www.idasailor.com Don't know much about them, just happened across their website & they have quite a few Catalina rudders.
