What is the best way to secure (lock) the rudder onto the boat, I bought a used Cat22(86) and every time the water starts slapping the rudder at mooring, the dang thing comes off the gundions(sp?) I pretty sure the rudder is in the orignal mounting, so if there is someone, somewhere that has a solution to this problem please let me know, tired of the marinia calling me and letting me know the rudder fell off again. THANKS

Rudder lock

My C22 had a spring that locked the rudder pins into the hinge openings on the transom. You had to push the spring aside in order to lift the pins out of the hinge. Whether this was original or otherwise purchased equipment, I don't know.

Cotter Ring

Butch: On my 1973 C22 one of the rudder pins has a hole drilled just below the grudgeon and I put a cotter ring in to keep the rudder from comming off. The hole was there when I bought the boat but I didn't use it until sailing on a choppy day the rudder popped off, luckly the line that swings up and cleats the rudder fin was tied off to the boat. Cotter Rings II

My C22 came with the cotter rings as original equipment. Just slip them on like a key chain. Never had a problem.

Rebend the Flat Spring

Will: I had to rebend the flat spring on my rudder to make it latch adequately. It now has plenty of force, and has never failed since I did this. To rebend it, you will either have to remove the flat spring, or remove the pintle, so that you can adequately rebend the spring. This could be a trick, because these pieces are probably all corroded together. The cotter ring solution also sounds good to me, and may be best if you can't get either the spring or pintle off.
