I have a 32 Vanguard yawl, built in 1964. Her hull #113. The rudder shaft leaks at the top, only when the engine is running in gear, while prop is turning. It is a full keel boat, and the rudder attaches to the end of the keel. The boat was originally tiller steering, but it has been convert to wheel steering. It's hard to see the top of the shaft, and it has play in it. Does anyone out there have experience in repairing these problems? Any help would be appreciated.

Check the Packing for the Rudder shaft

The rudder shaft has (most likely) a stuffing box just like the one for your drive (prop) shaft.. It needs to be maintained just as you maintain you engine drive shaft stuffing box... Maybe not as often, but none the less maintained.. Most likely you can tighten the packing and all is well... My guess is, that it will take longer to clean out the lockers and work your way to the shaft than it will to fix the problem. Good luck Garner

Nice Boat

There is a dude in Naples, Maine that has a Vanguard... it is bristol! I was looking around to purchase one... however after I saw that one... I was disappointed in my finds. Too much work... equals... no time to sail. Does your main roll up around the boom? No help for the rudder thing.
