Rudder Kickup

I have trouble with rudder kickup on my 1998 Hunter 260. I have noticed on some of the Hunters around that are a year or 2 earlier that they have a large wingnut to tighten the rudder. Mine has a bolt with a wooden shear pin in it that keeps breaking off. Is there a way I can make this better before the new season? Also anyone with a 260 with a bimini that has had trouble keeping it tight and has any ideas to correct that also. I am the only boat on the water that has a floppy bimini

Make your own.

The previous owner of my H26 had a wingnut made. He used a peice of 1/4" x 1" SS bar stock about 12-14" long, drilled a hole in the middle, to which he welded the nut, then bent each wing up slightly for clearance. A little hard on the hands sometimes, but it works great. You can just see it in the lower right of the pic

Have been expecting this post for a long time..!

AFAIK this is the first time that one of our boats complains about being neglected ("I am the only boat on the water that has a floppy bimini") by posting directly on HOW. Unless we stop this type of nonsense right here and now, the long-term consequences are too horrible to contemplate. I can just see "Rivendel II" ordering a whole new suit of sails from Phil because of a couple of rust spots, and so on and so forth. Who do you think will end up paying for such extravagances? I hope I am not the only owner worrying about this development. Luckily, there are two things that we can do to try and prevent things from getting any worse: (1) make sure you disconnect any and all internet modems before you leave her alone in her slip Sunday afternoons; and (2) ask Phil to keep a weather eye out for other posts like this (let alone accept rush orders for luxury goods to be delivered directly to your marina). United we stand! Flying Dutchman

TLC - yup, the poor lass was clearly neglected.

I'm a sucker for a neglected lady... there are a few in my marina I would love to take on if I could afford them. But then again, my own sweet gal Bluebird would be very jealous.

A Different Solution

Easiest solution is to call Hunter and replace the nut with the proper wing nut. Second and slightly simpler than Tom's solution is to have a peice of stainless cut drilled and tapped at a machine shop. They do not float so a second one may be a good idea I doubt they charge much more to make two than one.
