I noticed that the top of my rudder is starting to crack and or split. This is my second rudder in the last 14 months and I am wondering if anyone else has had this experience. I'm looking at the new solid rudder from Hunterowners.com to replace the existing rudder before it snaps like the first (that was interesting. Is there any repair or anything I can seal it with?

rudder

I realized that my asking which boat was helping me, not you. My 260 rudder split on sail over to Beaver Island. I was still able to use it, but was a bit nervous. I wondered if you had similar model. So I looked at Hunterowners.com's rudder & a solid rudder sounds like a winner. I'm calling my dealer tomorrow & requesting he get solid rudder - not OEM.

hunter rudder

my H240 started splitting top and bottom big time. hunter quickly sent out a new one. I decided to keep it on board as a spare and glassed the other one up. 2 years later and strong as every and have hit plenty with it. I would got for a different type if i were you, but some how glassing mine up works fine (I also have the backup ).

Does it freeze in the winter where you are?

A lot of rudders will get water into the rudder post eather through the top or via a leak where the post goes into the rudder. If there is water in the rudder and it freezes it will expand and cracks result. I put a small hose down my rudder post and pump out any water then I dump a small amount of non toxic anifreeze down. The best thing is not to get water in there in the first place. What I do is a cheap fix that works. I think everyone should check thier rudders for water evry fall

Rudder

Kevin - I have a 1998 Hunter 260 - I removed the rudder and will be storing it inside to keep it from freezing this winter and splitting any further. I may try my hand at re-glassing the area where it is splitting to try to stop it from expanding.

I have the same problem with splitting along the upper aft side. Sent it to Hunter who sent it to Foss Foam for repair/replacement. First rudder snapped clean through at the pivot point. Hunter has really been great on warranty replacement. IHMO the real problem is the foam core. I think the splitting along the back side is due to the flexing of the rudder. IDASailor (http://www.idasailor.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=403) sells a shorter solid rudder. They say the rudder does not have to be so long and 48" vice 54" is better. For non-warranty replacement I'd go with Idasailor.

Bottom coat for rudder

Gentlemen, Make sure that your rudders mast be painted with white color of bottom coat paint. During the hull out storage (no matter in what climate region you are) the UV containing in spectre of the sunrays destroys the rudder foam structure. Hunter manufacturer shall take the measures long ago when the complains started building up.
