I have a swing keel 1977 model. I am wondering if anyone has done a modification or maybe there is a modification already made for the rudder set up when going into shallow water where the rudder would bump the bottom. There are times where I only need another 8 inches and the only way I can get through is to take the rudder completely out of the 2 metal holders on the transom.Thanks.

Lift up rudder

Do you have a fixed rudder? Most of the swing keel 22s have a lift up rudder that swings up when it hits the bottom. On some of the older models, these lift up rudders have a tendancy to lift up as you're sailing, and causing a loss of steerage.

Newer model kick-up

I used to own a '73 C22 with the fixed rudder and know your pain. You could check with Foss Foam about getting a replacement kick-up rudder. Not sure how much this would run, probably a few hundred. Good luck, Jim

Foss Foam

Foss Foam does not make a C-22 rudder. I purchased one of the plastic rudder assemblies from the Chandlery on this site. I like my new rudder. The plastic has different qualities than the fiberglass rudder. It tends to stick in the side plates, so I do not have trouble with it sliding back when sailing. David
