The original lower glassed-in wood backing plate for the lower rudder gudgeon has had water intrusion and rotted. I cut the area out and removed the rotted wood.My question: can I just install a new backing plate (I am going to use starboard material instead of wood) by bolting it on the transom through the gudgeon or do I have to glass it in like the original was. Also should I re-do the upper gudgeon area while I am involved in this project, though it seemed to be solid wood above the cockpit drain (I don't want any more problems in this area in the future. Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions and comments.
