Yesterday I noticed a slight groan coming from the rudder post. The groan can't be reproduced easily, I'm not sure what conditions cause it. I first noticed it while motoring at near idle (slow) speed. Later, my crew was able to reproduce it after we picked up our mooring. But the groan is intermittent.

Right now we are at a mooring at Two Harbors, Catalina Island. Before continuing on our trip, I'm trying to discern if this something that:
  1. Requires an immediate fix before leaving the mooring
  2. Requires us to abort our trip, returning the 30 miles to MdR
  3. Is no big deal, we can continue sailing to other destinations for the week (60-100 miles of sailing) and can be addressed when we return.

Has anyone encountered this issue? I have no experience with this problem. This is a tiller config, btw, not a wheel.

It is gorgeous here, by the way. One of my best trips here yet! My 1977 baby can be seen between the trees, this shot lifted from the Two Harbors web cam.

Might be a lack of lubricant - the rudder post may be rubbing in the bearing.

Probably the white nylon washer under the rudder head. I spray on some McLube on mine about twice a year to make noise go away. No big deal.
