i own a beneteau oceanis 500, 1989 hull, built France... i am currently in cartegena, colombia and have a problem with my steering system... it appears the lower rudder bearing, which is of a graphite or composite is becoming brittle and disintegrating on one side, allowing a vertical movement of 1/2 inch and a lateral movement of 1/8 inch... as i am 400 miles from adequate repair facilities, i am concerned about the integrity of the steering system, and unsure of who to contact for advice...(i have no experience in this area) could anyone please advise an appropriate contact for assistance and advice or alternatively provide advice as to how to effect a repair and where to source a new bearing... i appreciate your assistance, regards, Rob Lennon My email rob_lennon@hotmail.com

Hi I have the same boat but have yet to go offshore. My first inclanation would be to call Beneteau in the USA and ask for their advise. Their number is (843) 423-6459 and I speak to Ward Richardson or Mike Watson. At a minimum they will probably be able to sell you a replacement. My rudder has some wobbly play to it and my surveyor and mechanic both considered it to be normal. I would doubt however that their could be a problem in mine too. Jeff Wood
