High All, I own a 2005 c310 Hull 314 and during a recent hawlout noticed movement in my rudder post. Question is do I replace both bearings and if so can the correct ones be purchased. Or should I use Part Z3244 Rudder Bearing Epoxy Repair Kit. Has anyone had any experience with the epoxy system and if so how good have you found the repair?

Thank you

It would be interesting to know what you are calling "Movement" in your rudder? I'd be surprised to see excessive wear on a 2005 (10 year old) C-310 unless there are a lot of hard miles on the boat, or the rudder was grounded.
Can you get an actual measurement on how much it is moving side to side..

I have owned the vessel for 2 years and it is sailed on a small river where waves only get to a max height of say two feet but wind strengths can be up to 30 knots but not often. Average wind speed say 15 knots or less. The boat is not raced although it does a fair bit of windward work and when conditions dictate appropriate reefing is applied. The yacht has a winged keel and has been grounded once on a sand bank under my ownership and on this occasion we sailed off the bank with the aid of the engine. I do not believe the rudder made contact with the sand bank. The movement is about 1/16 plus of an inch where the shaft protrudes from the hull and also movement at the top. Does this help?

Thank you Long Story

When we surveyed the C310 we bought (#31) the surveyor recommended replacing the rudder bearings. There was maybe 1/4" play at the top of the rudder post (removing inspection port for emergency tiller). CD sells a kit with all the parts, probably Catalina does also. I had the yard do the work, since it was already going to be out for bottom paint, steering cables, and cutless bearing.

Thanks for replying Rob, I will contact Catalina direct. By the way, who is CD?

Catalina Direct. They are a Catalina dealer in Sacramento, Ca. Not sure how/why they got into the Internet sales business.

My 310 is a 2003, and I had noticed some play in the rudder (about 1/8" at bottom) two seasons ago. I tightened up the rudder shaft seal and there has been no play for these last two seasons. The bolts for the rudder shaft seal were loose when I had first checked them, and I just snugged them up so that there was no play in the seal flange.

Thanks for that, I tightened the rudder shaft seal about 18 months ago. I will now re check.

Thanks Tom
