Hi yall, anyone have a diagram of the Vega rudder with measurements? Also, anyone know the rudder post diameter and length (assuming it runs the entire length of the ruxder . if no one has a diagram or measurements on hand, anyone have easy access to their boat out of the water willing to do some quick measuring? Thanks group!

Hi Jon, there is a Vega rudder for sale on e bay. If you don't have one, that might be a solution for you. There also is a section here under FILES that shows how to make a rudder. Very informative.

If you still need it I can take measurements. I don't know if there are any generational differences between rudders. V 2505 is second generation.AlanV 2505

Hello Jon,  I trust you got the picture I sent you of the rudder?  ·         The rudder shaft from end to end is 80 ¾” long.·         The rudder shaft dia. Is 1”·         Where the shaft sides into the rudder mount on the keel the shaft is 1 3/8” long…from the fiberglass end of the rudder to the end of the rudder shaft.·         The rudder length at the shaft end to end is 40 ¾” , this is only the rudder length where the shaft runs though the rudder.  As you can see from the picture I sent you, my rudder was cracked as well. I found it was filled with resin and sand. Only the fiberglass was cracked, I carefully opened up the edges and made a keyway cut into the rudders leading edges and filled and clamped using 6/10 west system epoxy. Once sanded and shaped you cannot tell there was a problem. Jon, clamp your shaft into a vise and try and turn the fiberglass rudder. If there is no movement between the shaft and fiberglass rudder you have an easy repair. I have picture of the whole goings on that will show you what to do. I hate windows 10, always sending stuff before I hit the send. Anyway I had the tab replaced with a better one but my shaft only went about a third of the way into the rudder. There was a stainless steel post about 6 inches or so long that fit into the bottom of the blade and that fit into the rudder shoe.  While I had it off I drilled a 1/2 hole about a third of the way down and filled it with putty. If I ever have that tab break again I can take a piece of 3/8" line with an overhand knot in it and place it through the hole, tie another overhand knot in and steer by pulling the line.  I\'d have to get wet so hopefully it would be in some place warm.                                        WaltTo: albinvega@yahoogroups.comFrom: AlbinVega@yahoogroups.comDate: Sun, 22 Nov 2015 02:01:41 +0000Subject: RE: [AlbinVega] Rudder and post measurements.

Any suggestions to make this clearer??Alan

Walt,You might want to try Ubuntu 14.04. It's a Linux-based operating system, similar to mac but free, that runs flawlessly, fast, and is virus free. On my laptop I loaded it so that I can boot to XP or Ubuntu, which allows me to run the 2 windoze-based programs I still use: AutoCad and Canon Zoombrowser. My desktop is pure Ubuntu. Sometimes I forget how great it is, until I have to fix my wife's Windoze pc!Peter.

Speaking of the files section, there's an excellent file How to build a Vega Rudder there that , on the last page, has all the measurements you could ever need. Someone has probably mentioned this file before, but I couldn't spot it in any of the recent messages.Peter

The bearings I make for the drive shaft (Control
Tubes) and the rudder shaft are for a 25mm shaft as Swedish, only the Brits and
the Yanks use imperial! They are bored to 25.15mm to give just a wee bit of
clearance. The control shafts are exactly 25mm +/- nothing!

Hey Group,
Hope everyone had a good thanksgiving.

So I'm having a heck of a time finding 25mm bar for the rudder post (at
least in the US). 1' is easy to get though. Would I be shooting
myself in the foot to build the rudder with 1' stock. The difference is
only 1/64th inches. Anyone with experience dropping there rudder have
thoughts on this???

Thanks!!!

Hi Jon,  Build it with the 1”, take the keel mount off and take it to the machine shop and have it turned to fit your 1” shaft. Take the piece at the top of the shaft that is held on by the bronze block and have the machine shop size it to the 1” shaft. I did the same to my rudder system, it was a no brainer. If for any reason the new shaft is tight in the shaft tube, just use a 22o sand paper and dust it down. Then buff the shaft. You would probably have to have the shoe bored to 1 inch. Steve's bearings are about 1/100 on an inch less than 1 inch so I'd guess you could probably get one of them bored out a tiny bit more. I'd check with a local machine shop. Might as well get it sourced locally. It would not be a difficult job to get a 1" shaft turned down to 25mm if you decided to go that route. You will be visiting a machine shop for getting the top of the shaft milled and drilled for the tapered pin. I see that the Vega rudder is still available on eBay for $350.00 or best offer and I'm kind of guessing that there isn't much of a demand for Vega rudders at any given time. You might make him an offer if he would split the blade off and ship just the shaft. there are some differences between Vegas and you might want to see if his rudder is from the same series as yours. Unless your shaft is bent you could probably rebuild your blade. It isn't rocket science to work with epoxy.
