Rubber feet under cockpit seats

Has anyone replaced the little black rubber feet things under the cockpit seats that keep the cockpit seats off the lockers and prevent that aweful sound that sounds like cracking fibreglass when you step on the seats? All of them are dry-rotted on ours and I was going to replace them, but am not having luck finding them. They are just held in place with the one screw in the middle of each of them. I counted about 42 of them on our boat. We have a 1987 Hunter 34 and I am sure all these things were the same on all the boats of this vintage. I can't think of where else these things would be used to know where to look. I checked the hardware store and didn't find them. Thanks.

I got the grey ones

I got the grey rubber variety at my local hardware store. I you can also get ones that are close at places like Lowes and Home Depot. Attached is a link that may help.

Black rubber things

I bought replacements at Lowes. Take an old one with you and head to the fastener area. I believe you can get them direct from Hunter, but Lowes was a quick solution.

Add two more

Jared, think of adding two more where the swim ladder contacts the topside edge when raised for storage.

Check Hunter Factory

for the rubber gommets. My boat is 12 yrs old and they still had replacements (proably all the same anyway)They are cheap and will be sent within 1-2 days. Othehrwise, I agree, can find grommets at most Harware stores.

I'm going to save my answer in 'my documents'

so I can cut and paste it here. On my H34 I hated those little bumpers. I replaced them with solid weather striping from West Marine. It has an adhesive strip and glues right to the bottom of the seats. The box contains exactly enough for a H34. The part number is floating around in another thread that should be still active here, among others. I just love keeping the dirt and water out and the heat/cold in.

Swim ladder idea

That is a great idea at the swim ladder. I was working back there on Saturday and that area looks terrible where the ladder has wore into the fiberglass. I guess I need to look at the hardware store harder (or give in and ask someone). I usually can't find anything in the big hardware stores - including someone to help. Weather stripping sounds nice and easy, that may be a good solution. Thanks for the ideas.

Swim ladder fix.

If your swim ladder is like mine there may be a better fix. Mine has two short 1" dia. stainless posts with rubber "crutch" tips. I place stainless washers inside the crutch tips. This prevents the sharp end of the tubing from cutting through the rubber and damaging the gelcoat. Still the UV rays require replacing annually. I tried black last year but same result. As for the lockers Fred's perimeter seal is the way to go. Silent and waterproof.

Just did mine too....

on my H31. Got them at Home Depot. Lowes didn't stock them. Tossed the screws and used stainless. Worked great. Around 2 bucks for a pack of 4. Good Luck.....Gary

"Rubber Bumpers"

Ed, I use the same "crutch feet" when the ladder is down, but suggested the bumpers for when the ladder is up. Home Depot is the best source for these things as someone else pointed out. I am rethinking Fred's idea for the lockers that open into the boat proper. Looks like I'll have to crawl in there to see what size will close the gap (something I discovered on my previous boat).

Got it Dan.

I had to reread the post to understand how you were using the bumpers on the ladder. My H37C ladder does not come in contact with the hull when up. That is why I did not catch on. That and being over 60.

Little Rubber Bumpers

Amazing how this keeps coming up. Hunter sells them for $.49 each. Give them a call.

Cash Cow....

The reason this keeps coming up is that Hunter designed these rubber bumpers to last 14 nanoseconds before crumbling. Last year, they sold 128 buzzillion of them to various Hunter owners and made more on them they do on their boats.....

When I discovered that my H310 had these little rubber excressences in lieu of weather sealing (and draw latches) I was apalled. I think you'll find that your lockers provide a direct path for downflooding into your cabin. I replaced my rubber bumpers with weatherseal and added rubber draw latches like those on the lazarette lids (which _are_ weathersealed from the factory). When I was pooped by a quartering sea coming over the Merrimac entrance bar at full ebb, I was damned glad I had. (My new "A-rated" H36 has latches and weatherseal on all locker lids from the factory.) I'd suggest you look into this on your boat.
