We will be in a marina next season and we need to have rub rails installed on our Beneteau 331. Our boat yard will install for us but we have to get the materials. Most of the rails I've seen are meant for the deck/hull seam. We need to install on the hull below the seam. Has anyone done this? If so, what did you buy and where? Can't wait to get all of these odds and ends sorted out so we can just go sailing!! Thanks! - Kathy

B331 Rub Rails

Kathy I'm curious, why do need need rub rails? Is it something the marina requires? Rub rails are available in any chandlery or boat catalog, there are a few choices on thicknesses and contours. Check West Marine on line. Most of these are plastic or rubber inserted in aluminum slots. You could also consider something nicer, like long stainless steel strips on a built-up fiberglass stringer. Your're right about where they usually are placed but that's in original manufacturing. The rub rail is so high off the watr at that point, that I don't understand why a marina would care. Am I correct in guessing your boat has the aluminum toe perforated rail? Help us understand why you need a rub rail to begin with, so maybe we can give you a better answer. Stu

yes, Why?

Kathy: I was also wondering WHY do you need this? How much good is this going to do if you install it below the deck/hull joint. You may find that the rail is not going to be thick enough to do any good anyway.

another why?

Wouldn't it be easier to install fenders or bumpers on the docks, or hang fenders off the boat?

Why We Think We Need Rub Rails..

What we have found is that the contour of the hull is not enough to allow the toe rail to protect the hull from scratches and gouges from pilings, etc. We have only had the boat a short time and already have a few nicks - we did have fenders in place but of course they weren't quite in the right spot. The marina doesn't require any rub rails but another Beneteau 331 owner in the same marina has them for the same reason. His is installed a few inches below the toe rail on the hull. Unforunately I don't know where he got his and don't know how to get in touch with him.

Fender Boards

Your answer to hull damage is fender boards. 2 fenders strapped to a 2x6 board of an appropriate length are good for pillings, docks, or anything else. Make up 2 per side and you are covered. Easy to make at very little expence.

Rubrail options

1-if you like your neighbors solution, leave a note on his boat asking about it with your phone #. 2- fenderboards are good. 3-ask Bene about rubrail options. 4-ask Bene if they offer (not sure of the proper name here) a rubrail strake like cruising boats have along their hull. 5-get a custom made rail strake. 6-check out Taco website where West Marine gets rails.(They can special order it if they don't stock it.)
