Has anyone had to repair major damage to the rub rail on their H23? I have some damage on the starboard side that really needs to be fixed... The rubber rail is all still there, but about 6" of the plastic 'track' piece that holds it to the deck seam is missing. Is there a place where I can buy this plastic moulding? Also, I believe the hull/deck joint here leaks when hit with water (Wet bunk after hose-down = no fun...). Any advice on how to seal this? (silicon? 5200?) Would the whole project be easier if I just remove the entire rub rail, seal the entire hull-deck joint, and replace with a new rail? Thanks for your comments, --Jon Bastien '2 Sheets to the Wind' Key West, FL

Rub rail

The rub rail consists of two parts, the rail and of course the insert. The rub rail is screwwed onto the boat in the area of hull to deck joint. Remove the insert by pulling it out. When you do this, mark the insert with the rail with a pencil for a reference point when putting the insert back onto the rail. For every screw or hole never filled, definitley use 5200 and suggest putting some on the threads too. I do it all the time and the boats never leak again. Over caulk to make sure and clean up imeediately afterwards. Mineral spirits or acetone is what I USE.

Hunter stocks it?

Jon: Hi! Same problem for me over the years. The white plastic part of the rub rail gets brittle and a light impact breaks it. Fortunately it is easy to fix. Several years ago I ordered a 10 foot piece of the rail from Hunter. When you break a section, pull out the black part, cut the ends square with a hack saw and fit the new piece in. You made need to add a few stainless screws on the ends. Add a little white caulk and most people will never notice. Good luck Scott Wells "Wells Cargo"

Hunter has the best price

I had to replace mine last year. By far the best pricing is a complete kit from Hunter. I believe it was about $70 which was far better than some of the second market products. I called, they put it on my credit card and 2 days later it arrived UPS just like a real store!
