RPM won't stay up

Have a Universal 25 xp 1996 and have difficulty keeping rpm higher than 2500 . As soon as I remove my hand from the lever , the engine back down to 2500 rpm, It gotta be an adjustment somewhere ! in the pedestal or on the engine ?
And by the way, is this normal than with this engine and a 3 blades prop, my Cat 28 will hardly reach 5 knts. I read that a 3 blades prop is slower than a 2 blades prop but I would expect a reasonnable 5.5 - 6 knts since the manual talks about 6.5 knts hull speed ! Just bought the boat so I learn a lot about her.

thanks for comments.

ml, we have a ton of info on your engine in our C34 tech wiki. You're welcome to it:

http://www.c34.org/wiki/index.php?title=Diesel_Engine

The systems on our boats are almost identical, so use that wiki for other stuff, too.

All you need to do is go down to the engine, forward starboard side, and find the end of the throttle cable. Just adjust the tension screw there.

Good luck.

No adjustment screw at the end of our cable -

however there is a clamp screw midway down the cable the just creates friction. I don't have a photo but it is just a "U" shaped piece of aluminum with a bolt that slips over the cable, and the bolt is tightened so that it pinches the cable between itself and the other side of the U.

"cable clamp? Are you talking about the clamp that acts as a guide to hold the entire cable&jacket in place?
If that's so, the cable guide should NOT act as a clamp on the outside of the cable jacket. It should only hold it in place.

ML, I was WRONG about WHERE TO ADJUST THE THROTTLE tension (or "throttle creep")

It's NOT at the engine end, it's in the binnacle, and you need to tighten the friction nut (7/16" I believe) that's under the compass. That nut is just on the inside of the Edison pedestal on the throttle shaft. That's what should control throttle friction.

www.edsonmarine.com has a great maintenance manual for wheel steering.

You were right about the nut in the pedestal that control the friction for the speed lever , works fine now .

Thanks
