The guage stopped showing the engine speed. Is there something I can check before I replace the unit and find out that is not the problem.

Tach sending unit
On some Universal diesel engines, the tach sending unit connection is on top of the thermostat housing and is very easy to accidentally disconnect when lifting the engine hatch or cover. It is a single wire with sliding connection over a post. You might want to check this first.
