The wording may be the key, also. If it says "shippiing AND handling", that's one thing. If it says "shipping", I would expect that to be the cost of the carrier only, and none to the seller. I expect the seller to make his money on the product, not profiting on the hidden "shipping". And as my dear old pappy used to say, "to argue with a fool only proves there's two of them", so let's go back to the OP.

Many vendors inflate the price of their products to help offset the cost of shipping and handling.

Depending on how they are shipping items they may also in cure costs for the packaging. Boxes are NOT cheap. If someone ships through the US Post Office they can get free boxes. If they ship with Fedex or UPS they can also get free supplies if they use quick shipping methods.

So I guess that it depends on the company that you are purchasing from and the "TOTAL" shipped cost.

Personally I have always been quite satisfied when ordering from SBO, so I have no complaints. Good prices for the goods, and reasonable shipping costs (actual cost).

you come here and use this forum for all it is worth for FREE, without even giving the chandlery a shot at adjusting things or even getting beyond the shipping "estimator" before you buy elsewhere than slam the site publicly, is just flat out inapropriate..

Exactly. The information and support provided by these forums are priceless and well worth a few cents (or even a few bucks) more in shipping...if that is even the case.

Dude, you got nothin' to feel bad for.

Wow. I'm really feeling like a weasel now! In under 10 minutes, I got not one but three emails from the company. They reiterated that they charge actual shipping costs without markups. They explained the issue with how their system handles (or doesn't!) numerous very small items. They also looked at all the items in my cart (how did they know that???), and found that a 2 oz item was in their database at 1.5 pounds, which they have corrected.

IMHO, being suspicious of numbers that don't make sense to you is not only okay, but even, well, sensible. It sounds like you and he (the company) communicated quite a bit. Cool. It appears that Phil is more than willing to listen, explain and communicate. If he and you agree not to agree on a deal I doubt he would wish any ill for you going elsewhere.

You said a phone call was in order and I'm assuming it solved a bunch of stuff. Good on ya'.

Yes. Although remember that they work with a half dozen or so boats and we work with hundreds.

There's also something of a misconception about that. Boats are more like houses than autos. Unlike cars, they're not built by robots. And like houses, they consist of a primary structure that is finished out with third party components.

Those components change at odd times and for no logical reason. I recall that my 450 was one of the first dozen or so that were built with Volvo engines. There rest had Yanmars. So. What's the "standard" engine mount/oil filter/alt belt/wet exhaust hose for the 450? Molds are tossed after every so many boats. Slight mods are made to each mold, and not all layups are identical. So there's no "standard" companionway door size. The manufacturer who made the deck water fill fitting may have moved production offshore in 1996 and the threads for the caps changed. Blah blah blah.

That said, there are some components that are pretty consistent and still available, and we intend to do a better job of identifying those for you.

Grommit thru Dorade

If the raydome is mounted on the mast (where it should be) Then why not just run the raydome cable internal in the mast. The only reason to use a a grommit is if your mast deck mounted. There are plenty of manufacturers that make low-loss connectors.

Today's query is about holes. Holes in decks. Holes in decks that have wires running through them.

I'm wanting to tidy up the 'wiring' of the DPO (dreaded previous owner) that runs from the radome to the receiver. The DPO ran the wiring through a dorade vent. Yep, right down the hole.

My plan is to do things a bit differently.

I'm thinking a hole in the fiberglass with a sealed 'pass through' of some sort.

For the life of me, I cannot come up with the proper name for this goodie. A grommet won't do the deed methinks as I don't know of a neat and tidy way to seal this 'pass through' from water slopping over the deck.

You know?

I use the vendors mentioned but always check here first, because:
They have called within minutes of placing an online order for clarification of some dimensions.
Actually I think shipping costs were reduced from estimated on 3 out of my last 4 orders including a full set of cockpit cushions.
They usually ship next day and I get it within days, it seems to take weeks for something to get here from defender.
On my last order they were cheaper than the manufacturer's website charged.
I just paid Navpod $22 shipping and handling for a $99 in the SAME COUNTY.
