Routing Transducer Cable

Okay, so my depth finder transducer quit working. This was verified through trouble shooting. So I ordered a new transducer for my Stand. Horiz. DS45 with the extra long cable. How in the heck do I route this cable. My boat is an 86 TR with the edson steering pedestal. The exisiting cable runs down the pedestal tube/hand rail and out the bottom of the cockpit floor. The male and female end of the exisiting and new cable are too large to fit through the hole in the back of the instrument cluster and look too large to fit through the tube/handrail especially since the speed cable and power lines run through there now. Can I splice the new and old cable together? I cut the old cable at the old transducer and found that is wrapped in some sort of foil and plastic. Is this some sort of sheilding? If I splice I will not be able to maintain the continuity of this foil. Will this affect the operation of the unit? Additionally I've heard of people mounting the transducer (shoot through hull)in a big puddle of silicon vs epoxy. Anyone done this with good results. Tim

Splice the Wire

Tim, You should be able to splice the wire. The shielding your mention is just that--a shield against magnetic interference & radio interference so that the signal from your transducer doesn't affect (or get affected by) other instruments. If you splice the wire it's true that this shielding will be compromised, but it shouldn't have any meaningful impact. I'd try to splice it as close to the transducer as possible, while still making sure that there's a reasonable chance that it won't get wet (either by bilge water or possible condensation of water on the hull). When you do splice the wire, be sure to use marine grade wire crimps & waterproof "shrink wrap" type insulators. You might even want to follow that up with a couple of layers of electrical tape. The point here is that you don't want salt water to get in there & cause corrosion or a short. Good luck!! Allen Schweitzer s/v Drambuie C-30 Hull# 632

Cutting works

Tim, When I moved my DS45 from the bulkhead to a pedestal mount I cut the cable and treaded it using the cut end through the pedestal guard and cockpit floor (had to make a larger hole but that was easy) and spliced it inside te eboat. Works fine. Follow Alan's instructions on the join. David

throw hull

I got a through the hull transducer fron ray marine with a adjustable mount that gets filled with oil .I had to cut the transducer cable at the plug and splice them ,workes good . John Olson
