Routing halyards to the cockpit

Has anyone routed the main halyard of their 23 to the cockpit? If so, I would be interested in the details: placement of winch, blocks, cleats, etc. I would like to do the work before the next season in cunjunction with installing roller furling on the jib. I am considering leaving the winch mounted on the mast and running the halyard aft with a block at the base of the mast, maybe through a second block, along the side of the cabin trunk, to be ultimately secured at a cleat on the side of the trunk near the companionway. I know that ideally I would have the winch mounted somewhere I could access it from the cockpit and have a line clutch between it and the mast, but it seems to me that there simply isn't room on the 23, given the fact that the sliding hatch takes up almost the entire area of the top of the cabin trunk, and the teak handrail takes up most of the side. Ideas, comments, suggestions? Thanks.

Simple but effective

Mike... I did what you're talking about to my O'Day 22 several years ago...its worked great since. I even have a recent photo of the rig taken from the cockpit forward, but can't seem to be able to attach it to this response. If you want to contact me directly (rschehl@mindspring.com) I can email the photo to you along with a description of what I did. Rick.....

Routing halyards on O'Day 23

I had an o'day 23 that I routed just like you decribed. At the base of the mast I used a stand up block on a spring, then over to a check block mounted on a small block of teak that I had trimed the bottom so the halyard would go around the block on angle from the stand up block and yet go over the ridge at front of the sliding hatch by the hand rail then back to a bullseye fairlead then to a c-cleat at the cabin edge. I really didn't need a winch. You have enough leverage to get the sail tight. Use large washers inside the cabin on the bolts for backing. I've done just about the same thing on my 26 o'day except I needed a small winch at the back edge of the cabin. Cam cleats work also.

cockpit controls

Mike, I ran my halyards to the cockpit by attatching a single block on a short strap to each side of my mast step plate.I ran the lines through the blocks and back to a couple of bullseye cam cleats that swivel. I mounted those about half way between the hand rail and sliding cabin hatch. I set them as far back as I could and still acess undernieth to bolt them down.I have a 22 but I think the are about the same. I have never thought I needed a winch to raise the sails.
