If you own a Yanmar 30hp 3 cylinder diesel does it run rough below 1000rpm's? I always thought this was natural, but recently I've been told that it should run a lot smoother than it does.. It starts fine, but bangs and clatters below 1000rpm's. Thanks Ron

rough?

My 3cylinder Yanmar runs smooth all all rpm's a little shake at idle but not much [as is wiyh all deisels] you don't say how rough it runs but should not be bad. Sounds like you may have an injector problem if real rough get it checked out !

Low RPM

My Yanmar was rough at idle. It also would shudder when I throttled down from cruising RPMs to idle. It turns out that the throttle stop on the engine needed resetting. It was starving for fuel I guess. After increasing the idle to 850-900 RPM it smoothed out. Maybe that is your problem. Allan

chances are your diesel has virtually no mechanical wear .most rough running engines in this catagory have varnish deposits on valve stems and on cylinder walls ps treat your diesel like a diesel and not like a gasoline engine.

Thanks All

Thanks to you who answered my question. I've check around and the general concensus is injector problems. This weekend I will pull the injectors and have them cleaned, then let you all know if it helped. In answer to some of your questions and comments; 1.)It runs very rough below 1000 rpms. 2.)My throttle is also the engine stop when pulled back all the way so there is really no way to adjust it. 950rpms seems awfully high to put the transmission into gear. 3.) I didn't understand what you meant by, "Treat it like a diesel and not a gasoline engine???? I've owned and operated 18 wheelers for the past 15 years and I always just treated them like an engine. I know you shouldn't idle a diesel for any longer than you have to, but that's about it??? Have a good weekend all...Ron

SHOULD BE SMOOTHER

MY EXPERIENCE W/ THE 3 CYL. 30HP YANMAR IS THAT IF PROPERLY ALIGNED AND MOUNTED IS ONE OF THE SMOOTHEST OUT THERE. CHECK YOUR ALIGNMENT AT THE SHAFT, SHOULD BE W/I 19 THOUSANDTHS.

And the Answer is.............

Well, here it is. I pulled the injectors which really weren't in bad shape at all. Still, I took them apart and cleaned them. Did it help? NO! In fact, the engine ran rougher than before. I was onto something here. I put my hand over the top of each injector body while the engine was running. No.#3 was leaking. I pulled the injector again and found that the little doughnut shape gasket called an insulator (diesels answer to the little washer on a sparkplug)was torn. A fast trip to the local Yanmar dealer and she's a-purrin' like a kitten. Total cost with tax...$3.73 So for you who said injector problems... You were close.. Thanks, Ron
