Rough evening

Wife and I were about to go out on our first overnight trip with our 1 year old daughter. I got out of the slip and was headed out of the marina when the rudder pin broke (I didn't realize it at the time). Not knowing that I had lost control, I couldn't figure out why the boat was getting blown in the last red marker into the marina. One I got pushed off of the marker, I was then getting blown towards the bridge pilings when I realized the rudder had floated up. I decided that I was better off out in the River (St. John's) than trying to get back into my slip without steerage (thought was safer for other boats :) ). So, I loosened the lock on the engine and started steering by pushing the engine from side to side. Once I got safely out into the channel, I began to try to pull the rudder back down, only to find that the downhaul line knot apparently pulled through the hole in the rudder. About this time, a thrunderstorm decides to pop-up, so the winds and wavelets are a little rough for me to try to stand on the rudder (with the engine going) to try to get it back down where I could slide the metal trailering pin back in to regain steerage. So, I decided to try to motor up to the outside of the doc and tie up. Luckily, one of the sales people from Whitney's either heard my radio call to them or happened to see me out there struggling and came out to help me tie up. Waited about 30 mintues for the storm to do its thing and then her and her husband came back out to walk the boat around the dock where it would be more protected. I went out today, undid the pulleys that were inside the rudder post (they don't provide much mechanical advantage anyway), took off the crappy thin line that WAS attached to the rudder and took the bigger line all the way to the rudder and was able to cleat the rudder down. Don't know what I am going to do to resolve this issue permanently, this is the second time that the rudder has popped up when I was motoring near the docks. I think I will also look at linking the engine to the wheel as well... and but a gift card for Linda and her husband to a nice restaraunt :). Darren

Rudder pins & EZ Steer

Darren, I have not had a problem with my rudder pin( the plastic one) shearing off. As a backup, I went to Home Depot & bought a wood dowell rod & cut it into small pieces to keep on board should the need arise. This might be a backup option for you. I also installed the EZ Steer system & it works great. It takes some time to set the system up & get it attached correctly, but it provides a great linkage and you never have to disconnect or adjust it when you pull the motor up. There are also other home made systems in the archives that appear to work well. Hope this idea helps.

Hey neighbor!

Wow, all that happened and you came out well! It seems that there were others yesterday who had trouble with that storm and had boat problems too. As they say, boats are safe in port, but that's not what boats are for. We are glad that everything turned out okay, and admire all the experience you earned - plus another assurance of how fortunate we are to be in the same marina. Al - "Dream Catcher"

Pop up rudders

Darren. I have posted further down an article I wrote on how I created a down haul on my 260. I have had similiar experiences. There numerous articles on steering linkages. I think if I were to do it again(I have created my on) I would look at with EZ-steer. Hopefuly future excursions will be better. Corky MeriCay, Dodge City, Kansas

Question

When I was investigating the downhaul line and the hole that it goes through in the rudder, I stuck my finger in only to find that the inside of the hole seems to not be "finished" and smooth. It seems to be jagged and porous. Should I be concerned about this?

question

I don't think it is a problem. Yu might file it down and the use soem fiber glass to finish it. I just have a knot up against the hole and doublt if the edge will cut the rope. ct

Thanks for not hitting Slowdance...

...it gets enough pounding when Todd docks his Watkins 27. I haven't looked that closely at your rudder set-up, but is it possible you are running aground or dragging the rudder and forcing the rudder up off it's pins? My previous boat, a Precision 21, had cotter pins that locked the rudder pins in place, the rudder could kick up, but not pop off the stern. It gets pretty shallow near that red marker. Sea ya th8s weekend. Steve
