I am looking to repair a soft spot on my deck where I suspect the wood has rotted underneath the fiberglass due to water getting in thru some of my deck fittings... I see there are a number of products on the market for this problem but would like some input from some of you that have tried these products and which ones you would recommend.

Kill wood rot spores, then repair

Before repairing with epoxy, you have to kill the spores that cause wood rot. There are two inexpensive materials that will prevent the recurrance of wood rot: Borates, such as borax & boric acid mixtures, and commercial products like "TimBor" etc. and Ethylene Glycol (antifreeze). and a combination of sodium octaborate in ethylene glygol sold as "Boracare" There are several other commercial preparations; but I've found the glycol antifreeze to be cheap & effective, though often difficult to get the affected areas 'soaked'. After extracting all the 'soft' wood, soak well beyond the margins of visible dammage, and use lots (of glycol)! Hope this helps, Gord
