I read in the linoleum square post that you have black walnut laid over oak beams? IF one were so inclined to install a floor like that in their sailboat, how was it done? Also what are the thickness and width of the lumber? What did you coat it with, varnish, polyurethane? Also could you post some up close pictures of what it looks like. Did you install that floor yourself?

Hermit, I have a very deep bilge and I bridged the bilge with

oak joists that measure 2"x2" these are glassed in on the ends. The walnut is 3/4 inch thick and about three and a half inches wide. The planks are not full length because I wanted to be able to lift sections for access. They are finished with a urethane penetrating oil about three coats to start and a new coat every year or two since. I am going to the boat today and will take some pictures.

That looks very nice. I see now why you installed the 2X2 oak.
Do you use urethane penetrating oil on your teak? If you don't what do you use and why? I am going to start stripping the teak this week, I don't know what I will put on it after though. I was thinking about varnish because I know it can be removed and redone 5 or 10 years from now.

Hermit, I don't have any teak.

I have ash, cedar, cypress, hickory, locust, mahogany(true), oak and walnut. But No teak. Urethane penetrating oil sealer is the only clear wood finish that I use. the outside gets paint.
