I need to replace several lines (ropes) on my Starwind 22...I get very confused looking at different ropes...what is the best price ropes that I can buy to get the job done? maybe I could wash them, they seem to be in good shape, but stiff and dirty; I believe they are the orignal 1982; some help would go a long way with my confusion...

You can wash them. Try soaking them in laundry detergent and then a fabric softener. Just today I removed my main sheet and feed it thru the pullys from the other reverse end. The main sheet was getting a little frayed where it meets the pullys but the other end of the line was in good shape. If you purchase new [and they sell them on this site] you can try lines with different colors to help sort out the confusion. Give the people here a call, they will help you pick the correct lines/ropes. Jack

have very good descriptions of the types of line to buy for different uses. WM sells New England Rope lines. Plus there are many different manufacturers of line (Sampson, Yale, etc.). Each of them have websites. We don't know how you use your boat (racing or cruising) so you need to do some homework first. Also, many sailors have definitive preferences for one manufacturer or type of line for their own use. Cost, as you can well imagine, is also a factor. Anything you can clean up is at least worth a good try.

Only problem with 20 year old rope ...

is that there is no way to be sure of its strength. I had an old reefing line just snap [Pop] last summer, and last week my neighbor in the marina had his jib halyard pop at the top block ... roller furling so the line was always under strain at that point. By the way, I always use an additional reefing line {1/2 in.] at the end of the boom as protection in case the reefing line goes or slips ... so it only moved a couple of inches. That extra line was the lesson from ripped out reef points 15 years ago. Would have done it again without it. Vic "Seven"

Try calling Dave Smith at Milwaukee Rigging, 338 N. Milwaukee St.,Milwaukee WI, 53202 at 414-403-9579. Milwaukee Rigging offers a very complete selection of New England Ropes at competive pricing. I learned about him from ebay and have been very satisfied with his service.

Washing works!

If you want to wash your lines, you can place them in a pillow case and tie off the end. Use a little detergent and rinse with some Downey fabric softener. They will look much better and should serve you for several more years if they are not worn.

I have bought a bunch of line from an ebay vendor. His email is roscoef@msn.com. He beats defender's regular prices.

Sorry-

Sorry, I saw the name of another rigging company here and figured it must be ok. My mistake. That aside, nomatter who you get line (or any other boat parts for that matter), always check ebay and all the rigging sites- there is no need to pay retail prices for any of this stuff. I got all new rope clutches from a guy on ebay last year and saved about 70% off my local blue marine store. MBRR

old line bad

While that old of line may look Ok, it's really time to renew. Samson XLS or New England Sta-set are pretty much the recreational sailor's standard. This site, Defender etc... Don't buy cheap line that looks like marine double braid; I've seen really decent looking stuff at GI Joe's and other places that actually had strength disclaimers, really isn't fit for boat duty.

Will climbing rope work?

I have a bunch of climbing rope left over from belaying. Will this work?

Not really

Climbing rope isn't really designed for high load, low stretch. It's going to stretch more, weigh more, and have lese tensile breaking strength. Basic dacron double braid is not expensive. Several places here have been mentioned to find it for less... Going cheap might make more headaches than you figure- what if you use it for a halyard and it breaks and pulls through? Now you have to fish a new one. Wayne
