HELP!! ROPE PULLING THINGS ON SIDE OF BOAT FOR FRONT SAIL.!JAMMED I just bought a used hunter 25' 1974 for my husband and myself. We took her out and the things you put the rope around and it sound like you are winding a clock is jammed on the left side of the boat. It is on the side right about mid way to help get the front sail up, with out getting blisters on your hands. The one on the right works great, but the one just turns and doesnot take up the slack and I have no clue of the right name . All I know is it does not work and I need a new one. Thank you for your time for this silly letter. I am new at this. this was the first time I was on a boat and had to work on it. HELP if you can. Sincerely Elizabeth E-mail Address-Zizibeth@aol.com

winches

Im going to assume what you are talking about is called a jib sheet winch. Its primary use,is to tighten the sheet (rope) to the jib (forward sail).First all winches Im familiar with have the sheet (rope) wrapped around them in a clockwise direction looking down on them, make sure this is not your problem. Your winch is probably a simple one speed, which means as you look down on it, the drum (where the rope goes) turns freely clockwise (ticking clock) but to crank in the sheet (rope),winch must be turned clockwise with a winch handle that goes into a star shaped hole on top of ,and as you turn and take up line you must keep tension on sheet (rope) coming off rear of drum. When done winching you must fasten free end to cleat and your done. I have described this as I feel you need, Hope it helps. Sailing is great, get a little knowledge at your local library, and go out and practice. Remember, basic rule is nobody shouts, and the idea is to have fun. Good luck red

Winches can be fixed

The winches should make a click-click-click when turned clockwise and stop dead when turned counter-clockwise. If nobody has done any cleaning or maintenance on those since '74, they should be taken apart and clean or possibly repaired. There could be corrosion inside too but almost always they can be repaired cheaper than replaced. There should be a plate inside the cabin that can be removed for access to them. Also...... get some leather gloves! A little gust of wind can catch you off guard and cause a nasty blister. In warm weather, I use cheap bicycle gloves from WalMart. Ken S/V Wouff Hong

Suggested reading

There is a nice, simple, and easy to read book that teaches you the basic sailing terms and boat handling techniques. It's called "Hand, Reef and Steer", by Richard Henderson, published by Contemporary Books, Inc. If you can't find this in print or in a Library anymore, there are probably similar books that would make getting into the sailing life easier, safer, and more fun. I recommend some reading.
