rope in the anchor locker question

Well a bit of advice or maybe call it any tips would be appreciated.

I've got 250' of rope and 15' of rode in the anchor locker. So who out there has any great tips on letting out the anchor and retrieving it without ending up with a tangled mess?

Really havent messed with it much yet as I just got my new anchor and all so anyway any secrets out there or maybe a utube video or link anything appreciated.

First tip is to cut that line in half, roughly. You don't need more than 150 feet. You could also shorten up that chain. Where r u anchoring?
I wrap my anchor line around one of those orange extension cord reels that they have at lowes or home depot and it keeps it well out of the way.

Well its near 80 feet deep and thats going shallow. If a persons lucky you might find 50' deep.

The rule of 5/1 ratio is pretry much impossible. But anyway yah cant shorten the line regardless. Least i never have to worry about my keel touching anyway

I've never had my 150' rope/ 15' chain tangle in the anchor locker. I feed it in and out by hand. I use 1/2" braided anchor line and perhaps that helps in some way.

Well honestly i havent even tried it yet i didnt have a proper anchor till now and never had the amount of rope needed either we've always just tied up on shore when we wanted to go swimming but at times that czn be a bit of a pain.

Maybe it wont be as bad as im imagining in my head hehe

Use your foot

As you pull in 2 to 3 feet of anchor rode with each tug, after about 5 pulls the deep area at the front of the locker will look full. Take your foot and push the rode down deep into this area, being wet the line will compress very tight into the bottom of the locker. Just keep doing this, I’ve never had a problem.

you should have no trouble at all with it.... but first, when you load the rode into the locker for the first time, lay it all out in the street or dock so you can pull it in and it will rotate naturally as needed to keep kinks from forming. continue to pull the rode in, and just let it fall in the locker as it may. try to keep it fairly level so it doesnt build a mound and fall over as that will cause problems when you let it out next time.
the rope will stay put as it will form to the pile below it and the next few feet will stack on top of it holding it down..... BTW, as you pull in the entire 250 feet, have fun with that!.... then lay the chain and anchor on top of the pile....
when the rode is put away wet, it will lay better and it wont shift around in the locker except under extremely odd circumstances. when you pay out line, it comes off the stack as neatly as it went on without tangles.... its just the way it works.

What weight and type of anchor are you using? It is very, very hard to set an anchor in that depth water with a boat as light as a C22. If that is your only method of securing the boat for the evening I would have a very heavy anchor. Can you secure line to shore or trees? If not then I would also use a kleig weight.

Bought a beautiful 13lb polished ss plow anchor off of ebay.

Naa I'd never trust an overnight anchor placement on this lake for overnight we tiw up to shore.

I'm on lake cumberland ky with 1400 miles of empty shoreline theres never lack of places to tie up but its a bit of a hassel to so it which is why I bought the anchor for swimimming, fishing and just stopping to picnic.

It's sheer clifts that surround most of the lake with solid rock to the waterline making a secure tieup more than just beaching.

The clifts dont stop at the waterline which comea into play the depth part lake averages around 90' down to 250'. The bottom comsists of mostly shale, rock(solid) and washed in clay layers.

Honestly best that can be hoped for on an anchor is to hold in place against a breeze but id never anchor over night.

To be perfectly honest i bought the anchor to practice with as in 2 years we are buying a larger boat and going to be wintering in the caribbean. Not a dream as im no good at that have always met life head-on so in two years maybe ill have something more interesting to post about. I'll be the crazy one makin all kinds of mistakes learning by the seat of his pants but havin a good time between the cussin hehe

Hey, Live the dream man, don't just dream your life away as Bob Bitchin says. I don't think that sailors really regret what they do, just what they don't do. When I read about a kid named Matt Rutherford who just sailed the Northwest passage, round the Americas, Cape Horn & back again in a 27 ft Albin Vega, non stop solo sailing for charity, then I know that I'm not doing enough. I'm just planning my cruise outta here, but when U got kids its hard to uproot them. By the way, that's some deep water in that lake you sail! Cheers.

Hey Allen,

Not sure where your sailing on the lake, but some years ago I use to boat a lot on Lake Cumberland, I spent many nights on the boat there. I anchored in Wolf Creek, maybe two miles in on the starboard side there is a small island.... (most called it dog island as it was where everyone dropped off there dogs for a spell) all around the island was great overnighting. Still 40+ deep but very good protection...

My boat is slipped in wolf creek after they moved aligator 1 down the lake a few miles and on the other side.

I live in jabez overlooking the lake but on the otherside of the penisula looking down toward conley bottom im attached to shin bone so i sit around 300' above the lake but only about 75' from the lake horizontally so it's a nice view.

My parents had a cabin in Jabez for years, use to launch right where that marina is.... small world......

Wow now you got me bummed out i didnt even realize for some reason that 90% of my photos were all saved on my other computer that crashed a few months ago.

Anyway heres a few maybe ill go out today and take a few pics the waterfall is at the back of my property ive got 4 others 2 that are bigger but this ones my favorite.

Oh and obviously had to include a pic of my cabin boy.

The one pic is a typical spot to camp or tie up the entire lake give or take is like that. If you havent been to the lake in a long time youll notice how much easier it is to beach since they lowered it to work on the dam notice the beaches the water would typically be up to the tree line where the clifts start.
