Has anyone for a Seidelmann 34 or similar replaced the rope clutch for the main / jib halyards? I curious if anyone found a direct replacement that will bolt right in (without drilling new holes in the deck). I noticed that the easylock rope clutch installed is similar to the Easylock 1 currently available but it seems undersized according to the specs. Based on the specs we should be using the Easylock Midi - Triple but will need to re-drill everything? Might as well go for lewmar? Any suggestions / recommendations?

34 Rope Clutch

Neal; If it is any help in making your decision...there is a good review of rope clutchs in the April 2007 Practical Sailor.Lewmar was rated at the top(best choice) and was the least expensive of all the ones they reviewed. Cheers- CaptHawk

CaptHawk, I've seen that article and was leaning toward Lewmar. The only issue was the need to drill new holes since the template is not the same, other than that I'm sold. You know; fill, drill, gouge out, fill for sealing, sealant and bolting them in instead of just pulling the old and having a direct replacement. Only in a perfect world... Do you still have the originals or have you made a change? have you used the lewmar ones? As always, thanks for your thought / help. Neal

Rope Clutchs

Neal; My 34 had no rope clutchs at all.You had to go fwd.to do anything with halyards/reefs/etc.I am in the process of making rigging changes and will lead all lines aft to the cockpit.Like you, I am still trying to decide which ones to install...I'm leaning toward the Lewmars[2- doubles on the port and a second set of-2 doubles on the stbd. cabin top____total of 8.]I have used Lewmars and just about every other name you can think of.I liked the old style Lewmars...not sure about these new D2's.Practical Sailor rated them pretty high. Garhauer is another one I am considering.I have a Capt. friend from California who has a lot of Garhauer gear on his boat and loves the stuff. He's done a circumnavigation with his 36' yacht and had no problems to report. So, I'm looking...but have not pulled out the old check book yet. Cheers- Capt.Hawk
