I am ordering a new C310. I was thinking of installing a Maxwell Freedom 800 automatic rope chain anchor winch for rope to chain spliced rodes,in lieu of the standard rope only electric windlass that Catalina US installs. I have details from the Maxwell website. My dealer is to get advice from the US to see if it can be done, as it would be a useful back saving feature. Anyone had experience of this & are there any associated problems?

Windlass on C310

Sue Given your recent posts, it seems like you're still working up your options list for your new boat. When it comes to your question, it seems that you would be much better off with the combination chain/rode option. Unless you only anchor in 12 feet of water, so you can, as we do, "get away with" 20 feet of 3/8" chain and 1/2 inch rode, scoped out at 10:1, and be able to pull it all up by hand. I guess you will be doing "deeper." Think about it - you'll need either chain / rode or all chain. Why go with a rode only? Good luck with your new boat. Stu

Windlass on C310

Thanks Stu You are right Still doing my wish list for the new purchase of 310. We have a C28 Mk II with rope/chain ie 30 ft chain and 120 ft rope with the standard catalina windlass (rope only). So we have to do the chain bit by hand. Hence my interest in the Maxwell 800 windlass that does both using rode spliced to chain. Better than the ones that you have to transfer the rode to the chain wheel manually. I am having an extra water tank put in new boat so cannot have all chain due to extra weight up front. Much deeper waters here

Check with the Manufacturer

I believe that the windlass manufacturer that Catalina uses has a chain / rope capstan avaliable (a significant change, but cheaper than a replacement windlass). You might want to check that out before you just discard the stock windlass and replace it with the Maxwell. When I bought my new C-320 last year, Catalina was very happy to upgrade the standard primary winches from #40s to #48s for a reasonable upgrade charge(upgrading both cost less than one replacement winch), so they might be amenable to installing a rope / chain windlass. Ask. The worst answer that you may get is "NO", but you may save yourself a bunch of bucks.
