Hello All, I just inherited a 27 foot Catalina Sail Boat. I have been sailing, but have never sailed on my own before. I am a complete novice. I would like to know if this is the type of boat one could sail around the world?

People have sailed around on smaller, but if you do, you probably have the "one" correct, as no one else would probably go with you. We keep our 356 in Alameda. With proper preparation for you and the boat of course you could circumnavigate the globe, but that holds true for most vessels and people.

I am pretty sure that there has been one that has circumnavigated. The 27 is also listed as one of the better small boats with good stability numbers. You might be interested to know that the Cat 27 was also built in England and was called the Jaguar. Would you want to do it in a CAT 27 , no.

If you check out the book, "Twenty Small Sailboats to Take You Anywhere," by John Vigor, he discusses the C27 and talks about the rigging and other changes that were made to the one that circumnavigated. That said, the C27 "as is" isn't really engineered for this type of adventure, but by all accounts she's a great boat. We've had a '25 and now have a '30 and have been very happy with both. If you polish your skills on the C27 and get really serious about a circumnavigation, there's a host of boats that probably would be better suited to that application. Until then, enjoy! As stated already, yes, the boat could go around the world, but you would need serious modifications, and really have a lot of experience in cruising before you started to look at it seriously. I think you will find that you are going to have your hands full just getting the boat in and out of the slip! I just got my C-27 a few years back, and there was a steep learning curve. It was, nonetheless, one of the most challenging and fun experiences I have ever had. Take a few courses, read extensively, sail every weekend, don't get discoruaged if you feel you are not learning quickly enough - and most importantly, HAVE FUN! Back when I was 20, I always wanted to see the Bahamas from the deck of my own small sailboat! Everyone talked me out of it and it stayed with me up till now! Now I am 54 and have finally decided not to listen to family and friends any longer! I am prepping my sailboat for just such a run and will go soon! Dont let anyone talk you out of it, if that is what you truly want to do! Take the necessary precautions, and prepare properly, but do it! Don't let it eat away at you all your life, like I did! Life passes you by, way to fast!
