Rolling boom

What's the deal? When we bought our Javelin 14 the previous owner mumbled something about how the boom can rotate on itself at the gooseneck and you can use that to roll the mainsail around the boom. We had no idea what he meant but figured we'd understand later. I still have no idea what that's for. Is it just a way to store the mainsail when docked? I can't believe it can work as a "roller reefing" system since rolling it would encase the mainsheet line and block and also interfere with the boom vang. Any thoughts on this? Is this standard equipment on many small boats? Thanks.

I think the thing just lets you flip the boom over if you put it on wrong. I can't see any othre practical use.

Roller Reefing Claw

The Javelin and other Odays that have the ability to roll the mainsail around the boom should also be equipped with a device that is called a "roller reefing claw". I remember seeing one years ago but I have been looking to acquire one for my Javelin with no success. After you disconnect the main sheet, lower the sail and roll the material around the boom, lock the boom back into place and hoist the sail taunt. Now slip the claw loosely over the boom
