I am new to big boats. I now have my 1989 Hunter 30 in the water. I need to replace the Fore Stay. After I do, I want to replace the existing (Old) roller furrler. It is a Hood. I want to get a new furler that all owners would report as at least "A GOOD Roller Furler!!!"

I would like to know which ones to stay away from and which are the best ones.

I hope it will be possible to reach some consensus on this question.

Thanks,
Steve

Steve: We purchased a new Spin-tec. It is a nice unit and it can be installed by an owner. It took us about 4-5 hrs. but it works quite well.

Check it out on this site.

No answer for you on which roller furler to buy, but what Hood furler do you have on your boat now? I've got a Hood Seafurl 915 that is like new, and want to put it on my boat. I'm looking for 1 more extrusion. any chance yours is a 915?

Check out Hood

I am also replacing my old Hood 810 LD and headstay on my H33.5. Check out the Hood SeaFurl 5 at Pompanette LLC. It list for $2550, but they will offer you a special deal if you call them on the phone and tell them you are replacing your old Hood. They offered me over 50% off. Now I am just waiting for it to ship. They apparently do not have stock on-hand to ship, and it may take a couple weeks.

I think that most all the modern name brand furlers (Harken, Schaeffer, Profurl, Furlex, etc) are pretty similar in price and quality. While I do not think that CDI is of the same quality as the brands named previously, those that have them seem to love them -- and they cost less than half what the name brands cost. A previous poster listed his Spin-Tec and I think they are of very high quality and reliability, too. Yet they have a very awkward and, IMHO, inconvenient method used to bend on/off your sails.

Perhaps the key to making a furler choice is how long you plan to keep your boat, how you use the boat (race/cruise), what your budget can stand, and who will install and maintain the furler.

FYI, not sure about the other brands, but the Furlex package comes with a new forestay.

Regarding Warren's comment. The Spin-tec has an option for r/r the head sail. If you do NOT purchase the option, then you have the jib attached at a permanent point. The only way to remove it is to go aloft.

The device they sell allows you to send a device up the forestay to remove the jib without leaving the deck.

One major advantage of this setup is there is no halyard to ever get wrapped. It is also very heavy duty.

I had a HOOD single loop line on my 27' Hunter; and I now have a single line (like a yoyo) on my 85' 31. I would buy HOOD again, but only the loop line model.

Why not look into replacing the bearings, et al on your existing unit before investing in a new unit?
