Roller Furling

My genoa roller furling will not roll the sail up all the way- which is funny because it did in the beginning of the season. In fact, I used to be able to get the sheets to wrap around the sails once or twice. Anyone got any clues? Thanks

Check the furling line

If you are getting the furling line all the way out and still not wraping the sail enough, perhaps the line has somehow lost some of its turns in the drum. Furl the sail all the way and them manually turn the sail and drum several turns to get the desired number of wraps of sheet around the sail. You'll then need to undo the extra turns of furling line that are now loaded in the wrong direction on the drum. You could also just manually wrap the extra turns of sheet around the sail while holding the sail to prevent it from rotating, so the next time you set the jib, extra turns of furling line will be wrapped onto the drum. Hope this helps.

Nigel, probably could use a little more info

Nigel: You should probably provide a little more info. What brand furler is it? Is it a continous line? etc etc.

also check

1.) If the halyard has slack in it and may have wrapped causing undue stress 2.) If you have a continuous line as on the older Hoods do the splice can loosen and cause a drag through the stanchion blocks.

Tight

Make sure you keep the sheet tension while rolling the sail. On my 150 it misses by about 5 turns if the sheet is held in check... Ron

33.5 Roller Furler

Nigel, If you have a Hood 810LD furler, try the following suggestions to improve the furler's operation: 1. Make sure that the tension on the jib halyard is eased a bit when furling. 2. Check the condition of the furling line. 3. Disassemble the furler drum cover and rinse the bearings with fresh water and lubricate the bearings with a silicon or graphite spray lubricant. (Hood actually recommends WD40) Make sure that the spray can has a plastic nozzle extension to ensure that the lubricant reaches the bearings. Make sure that the rope stripper is placed back in the proper position when re- attaching the drum cover. CAUTION: do not over tighten the set screw that tightens the drum cover because the cover is made of cast aluminum-- I cracked the cover on my drum and a replacement cost $60. 4. Rinse the halyard swivel assembly and lubricate. 5. If you do not have success with the above and the drum continues to bind remove the drum and return to Hood for rebuild. My Hood LD was having problems a few weeks ago. After disassembly, rinsing, and lubricating --it works great. Good Luck.
