What sort of unit do you have?

Barry: What sort of unit do you have? We have a CDI (not for heavy duty use) and it will un-furl but you cannot furl it in even with the winch. We need to have some on the foredeck to help roll it in. I just purchased a new Spin-tec unit and should be replacing the CDI in the next few weeks.

Just went through this

Knot at head atop the jib may be too high up on the forestay. You can tell easily by lowering the sail and examining the knot for wear and tear. To remedy, simply re-raise at a slightly lower height to avoid the problem.

I had a similar problem

with my Hood 810 LD when I first got my boat ('92 H33.5). I finally figured out that I was missing the lower bushing (#18 in the link below). I replaced it and it has been smooth ever since. I believe there is a similar bushing at the top of the extrusion. I'd suggest you check these bushing out and make sure they are still doing their job.

Hey Steve, how about.....

a full report when you get the Spin-Tec. I don't have any experience with them, but they sure look awesome! http://shop.sailboatowners.com/detail.htm?fno=400&group=129&cat=1606

Had a similar problem...

My H35 Legend's below deck, continuous line, Hood furler started acting up about 4 years ago. I replaced it with a furlex system and have been happy, except if I don't keep a tension on the lines when using the system, the line around the drum gets gummed up. I did, however, have to plug the two deck penetrations where the old line went below to the drum. I too looked at the spintec system and like it for its simplicity. I don't remember why I didn't go with it, except it was too new then. I'd also be interested in Steve's experience with his new one.

Also had similar problem

My 1990 Hunter 33.5 Hood 810-LD had problems binding when furling and unfurling. The main problem was the upper bearing shown as figure 1 in the attached link. One half was gone, causeing halyard wrap. This can be repaired without taking the mast down, but you will need to send somebody up the mast to do the work.
