I would like to add roller furling to my new 25. Any advise as to what make, model and price would be a great help. Also, what size genoa would be most useful to an amature. You could say I am learning to sail by the seat of my pants, I have only been on a sail boat 3 times, twice on my oday. One more thing, is this a project for a rigger, or something I should attempt myself.

Bill, At the top of this page you should see ASK AN ODAY OWNER TOPIC LIST then below that several options. One is archives. Click on that and search for roller furling and make sure to sellect O'day 25. You'll get several. This has been discussed many times. I have a 25 as well but no roller furling so I don't have any thoughts on the subject. You do have to take the mast down. You might want to run a second search on taking mast down on a 25. Lots on that too. I helped another guy take his down and it wasn't that bad. Especially with a couple of good strong backs around. Enjoy your boat. I've had mine for about 4 years and its been a treat. This was a step up from a sailing dingy. They are pretty simple to handle and good sturdy boats to boot. Of course you're on the coast I'm a land locked lake sailor. enjoy, Mike

Mike, thankyou for your guidence. I found most of what I was looking for. I had to unstep the mast when I bought the boat, and resteped it when I got it home. It was not all that hard, with a decent block and tackle I believe I can do it single handed, perhaps with my wifes help. We looked at a number of different boats before we settled on the Oday 25, then looked at several before we found a one owner that is very close to original, she is all we believe we need our waters. She is indeed very easy to handle, even with our limited experiance.

I was in the same "boat"! The O'Day 25, the novice and the roller furling questions. I went to friends and got, "Probably tricky for beginner", so I went to several boat yards. Mine gets installed, and mast stepped next few weeks. I figured I should start with it correct. You can email me for specifics at dasturdy@comcast.net.

Bill, I posted a reply to this same exact question a few months back, and you can find it in the archives. I'm also an O'Day 25 owner and relative novice to sailing, and I went with a CDI FF4 with ball bearings. It was easily the best upgrade I've made to the boat, very easy to use even for a beginner. Only drawback is I had to hire an expert to install it, but it was a smart decision and he was able to do it without lowering the mast. As for the sail, if you already have a 150 genoa you can have a local sailshop modify it for the furler and add a UV cover if you so desire. Good luck! Eric

I should add that between the cost of the furler, the professional installation, and the modification of my 150 genoa to fit the furler, I probably spent about $1,000. A lot of money, but I have no regrets at all. The furler easily doubled or tripled my enjoyment of sailing and has perfomed flawlessly.

I also had an O'day 25, it was a bit tender but a really fun boat, The problem I encountered with adding a furler was the deck hardware,on my 1980 model the forward blocks were stationary and that was fine for the 100% jib but the 150% ran thou a differant blocks at the aft, I never did figure out how to reef down from the 150 without also having to run the sheets thou the forward blocks, sooo, I passed on the furler idea. Jack, I went back and looked at some pictures of a 25 we were concidering buying one shows how it was rigged for the 150% jib. We did go out for a short sail, but I did not pay enough attention to detail as to how this set up allowed for reefing. Thankyou for your input. bill
