I recently purchased a catalina that has a hood roller furling system with a 135% jib. I love the ease of roller furling but have several questions. The jib halyard is led aft. What does it do? Does the jib halyard connect with the headstay? Or does the jib halyard raise and lower the roller furling sail itself? If my roller furling jib ever gets stuck out, how do I bring it down? Thanks for taking the time and answering some basic questions but important for me to sail safely.

halyard set-up

Jimi, Your genoa halyard is still use to raise the headsail. Mine was also lead aft but since it is, in theory used only once in the season to set your genoa, I have tide it to the mast and used the freed-up cleats and blocks for a reefing line. Now, the head of your sail should connect to the underside of top portion of your furler, as there's two parts to this unit, the furling "barrel" at the bottom (attached to the bow) and the top portion that allows the sail to furl at the top. Then your halyard connects on the top side of this upper portion. You use the halyard to raise your sail in your forestay groove. Once the entire sail has been raised, tie your halyard and furl your heasail...you're set for sailing! If you need to douse your sail, proceed with releasing your halyard and catch your sail before she ends up in the water! ;-)It is now different then dousing a normal headsul. If it ever gets stuck, improvise...find out how and why she's stuck, as it could be a number of things. You might be able to still a copy of the instuction manual from Hood @: http://www.hoodspars.com/ Wish the best. "G" "emilie-jolie" C30
