I have been sailing 1988 23 foot Hunter for a year. I am considering installing a Roller Furling. Can anyone recommend a good value for money make and model? Do I have to replace my existing jib? If I do need to replace the jib, I would like to upgrade to the largest one availible. Do you have any recommendations. Thanks in advance for any advice. Mike Walters Newburyport, MA

Mike, I've owned my H23 for a year as well and am looking to make a series of upgrades. Roller furling is on the list but I feel the need to fine tune the running rigging for better trim performance before I make the big investment, (ex: backstay adjust, boom vang, traveller, etc.) What I do know about the roller furling addition is that you will need to replace the existing jib fairlead with tracks to accommodate better trim of a larger sail. Check the archives for proper positioning of the track (further towards the midline of the deck the better) To get an idea of the cost of sails you can check the sail loft on this website. If you check the archives I think a lot of people on this site like the CDI furlers. I have the Schaefer Snap Furl (check sailnet.com)on my H26 and like it a lot. You can get your existing jib re-cut and have a luff tape and UV cover installed for a couple hundred (check with a local loft to see what they'll charge.) Depending on the furler you go with will determine what size luff tape they'll have to do. One thing to keep in mind is that with a furler you will get a bit more head stay sag but I don't really notice a performance difference compared to the added convenience. Good luck, Jim

Hey Jim Covey and other H26 users of Snap Furl Systems- On my H26(1998 model) the forestay is recessed at the bow below the deck - This keeps the Snap Furl drum from reaching the ubolt at the bottom of the forestay. Question - How did you install it on your H26? I have an early version Snap Fiurl set in the box and can't figure out how to mount it. Thanks Pat Hooyman

Extension Tangs - H26
Pat, I purchased 2 5 or 6 inch (I can't remember the exact length right now) tangs from West Marine. Put clevis pins in the holes at both ends, one through the d-ring on the bow and one through the turnbuckle. I think I had to drill out the holes in the tangs to fit the turnbuckle pin. This raises the drum above the deck. Another thing I should mention. I used to have trouble with the furling line jamming at the bail. Schaefer now supplies an attached fairlead for the furler that you can purchase separately which supposedly fixes this problem. Check out Sailnet.com for the fairlead. I just bought the fairlead so haven't confirmed it fixes the problem but see no reason why it shouldn't. Let me know if you have any questions. You can find my e-mail in the owners directory.
