Hi Larry

Yep the set has now been installed and tested all
winter with no leaks. Great quality and pretty easy to fit. Reckon it will be
about £1200 a complete set

Cheers

So I have concluded that rather than pay what amounts to a very
large ticket price for replacement windows I will fabricate a set of storm
covers. I have seen a couple of ideas
Bill Churchouse from the Jester Challenge has made a good set and there is a
Vega from Scotland that has made some wooden ones. I am interested in any ideas on
this topic and will disclose my design to the forum when completed. More to follow. Thanks John

Now here is a little trick I have learned. My windows were leaking
at the top of the window runing down the inside of the glass and
dripping onto both Port and stabbord bunks.I bought an injector that
looks much like the pump used to put a needle on for an
inoculation. IT has a longplastic injection tube on the end that
tapers down to about 1/16 of and inch in diameter. It is an almost
clear plastic syringe for injecting Epoxy. I put Sikaflex in it
and pushed the tip in between the rubber and the window all the way
to the edge of the window inside the rubber. I Moved it along
pumping Sikaflex in fairly generously but not enough to squeeze out
anyplace. It sealed the windows and they have not leaked since and
it has been two and a half years. IF if fails at some point I see no
reason not to redo it. I also wax the rubber now and then to protect
it from sunlight and rubbing black chal onto my pants as I crawl
around on deck painting and such. I was thinking about about a
break water set with ri ound dowls crossing the windows to break
impack of solid water hitting the window. Were the fram is bolted
trough into the inside I thought to put for wooden clamps mabe a few
inches long that would keep the windows from being pushed inward. I
had a similar set on another boat and they took some pretty hard
hits and held up well. Some Thoughts?? Doug

Steve's aluminum framed windows are terrific! Wish I could afford them. Instead, we replaced the original glass windows with 3/8 inch polycarbonate. $300 for materials and about 3 hours labor to fabricate and another hour with a helper to install. (for the two large windows)Seven years and more than ten thousand sea miles later we have not seen a trace of a leak. That is significant after three years in the Tongass (Subarctic rain forest) of Southeast Alaska.Photo link http://americanvega.org/images/600_DSC00722.JPG http://americanvega.org/images/600_DSC00722.JPG View on americanvega.org Preview by Yahoo Fair winds,Chuck RoseSV Lealea, V1860

Chuck, What did you use to seal them? Did you drill the holes oversize for thermal expansion or has it not been a problem? I have seen Chuck's boat (when he was in the Northwest (USA)) and the windows look great too. Chuck is a real craftsman -- he does much of his work while in various marinas without the benefit of a fancy shop. Chris BrownThere is

Hi Walt,The windows are sealed with Sikaflex. Yes, the holes in the Polycarbonate are drilled slightly larger than the #10 machine screws would normally require to allow for expansion and contraction of the material. I should have mentioned that you need to be very careful not to over tighten the nuts on the inside. They only need to be finger tight. Much more than that and you risk cracking the window. Once the sealant cures, that is what really holds the windows in place.Fair winds,Chuck RoseSV Lealea, V1860
