Bill's Famet furler is based on the same principle as the CDI, ie a halyard integral to the furler. This complicates raising and lowering the sail, but vastly simplifies the design. Eliminating the bearings and the possibility of fouling a jib halyard are much of the reason for either of these furler's popularity and relative lack of problems. I have sailed a little with a CDI (I, too, have had a famet, for about eighteen years) on San Francisco Bay, on a Catalina 27, and it worked just fine. If you are planning to use lots of different sails on your furler, you might want to stay away from either the CDI or the Famet and go with the Profurl, Harken, etc.
