28.5 Furler

I have a conversion on my 28.5 from a Hard 150 with a Famet furler. Famet advertised in Lattitudes and Attitudes. Built like a brick **** **** but relativly unknown. Make sure you get a foam luff no matter what. Eventually I will get a new genny and definitly get a mitre cut instead of a cross cut. You might investigate the cost difference between a new sail and recutting an old one. By all means the furler route is the way to go unless yopu are really into racing. My last boat I had 15 years and regret never putting a furler on it.

How old is your old sail?

If your sail is more than 6 or 7 years old, I would recommend buying a new sail, the size you want with foam luff and UV protective built in cover. Check out several places for pricing. Determine the weight of cloth b4 you shop. I would never have a crusing boat w/o a fuerler. Good luck!

Roller Furling

I installed a Harkin 1.5 on my 86 28.5 two years ago. It has been an excellent addition. I had my UK 135 recut to accept the furling unit, mainly to keep the intial cost down. The recut is ok but a furling designed sail is my next item to convice my wife to get. The recut works ok but since I replaced my main with a Quantum performance sail, the recut short comings are more appearent.

Same thoughts

I have had similar thoughts and questions on adding furler and 1.X size to my 28.5. Check the archieves for "furler" or "furling system" or CDI or Harkin or my name to review those responses about 1- 1.5 years ago. Had to buy a new cat tranny instead ;< Jim McCue

CDI Works fine

I chose the CDI Flexible furler because of cost, but have been very pleased in three seasons of use. The cost was 1/2 what some of the otehrs were, and it comes with a lifetime guarentee. I would recommend the foam luff addition to your genoa so that it will shape better when furled.

Stay away from Hood

Hood makes a great product however the SEafurl SL 700 has an offset at the bottom of the drum which would require a "modification" to the bowsprit. I ended up selling it on e-bay. CDI is a good choice. My original furling unit is a CDI (but, it's 19 years old).
