My boat, AGENDA, is a 1974 Hunter 25. I am thinking about putting in roller furling. Does anyone have any idea of which type and their costs.I hear that CDI is good. Also What measurements to I need to know before buying a roller-furliner?

Schaefer vs CDI
I had a Schaefer on our 27 and now have a CDI on our 33....I like the Schaefer better, but I suspect they cost a bit more. I suppose it's like most things,..you get what you pay for. That's not to say that the CDI will not do the job. The one on our 33 seems up to the task, just not quite as smooth as the Schaefer.

The CDI unit on my 81 H25 is simple,durable, and has never fouled. I sail with a working jib and could not speak for performance with a larger sail. My unit also came with the ball bearing upgrade and I'm told that this makes a significant difference in the ease and smoothness of operation. The measurment you need is ther length of your forestay, which is 31'5 1/2" unless someone fooled with it. Regards, Jim
Double check forestay measurement
Regarding the prior post. Double check on your boat. I bought a new genoa last year and the forestay on my 74 model is less than 31'. I think this is due to the flatter deck mold on the older 25s. I had a Hood continuous loop system on a Catalina 25 that I liked. Regular hanks on my Hunter.

CDI
I put a CDI unit on my 1978 H-27 immediately after splashing her last March. I had CDI on previous boats and NEVER had a problem. In fact, on my last boat, a Columbia 24, there was damage due to my not evacuating the dock in a hurricane, and when I contacted CDI they sent me a whole new drum assembly FREE. Their lifetime guarantee is valid, even in spite of the stupidity of yours truly. On the new instalation on Ciao Bella, I opted for the roller bearing model, only $90 more, I think, and can't express how glad I am that I bought the upgrade. Very smooth operation with no headaches so far. As an asside, you might go to www.pyacht.com and look at the prices for CDI, I think they're about as good as it gets. Neil Smith

We had a Harken on our first boat, a TANZER 26, and loved it. Our 1980 Hunter 33 came with a CDI and we have been less than satisfied with it. Maybe we need some sort of upgrade but I literally had to tie the bail "fairlead" down to keep the whole thing from spinning and fouling. This fouled on use several times and it's tough when you can't get the sail out or in, up or down.

My 34 (bought last year)had a CDI. I solo sail most of the time and was less than satisfied with the performance. I must admit I did not investigate why it was not functioning properly. And perhaps I could have fixed the problem as I understand several CDI owners are very satisfied. But I still had a Profurl NC32 in my garage which had given tremendous satisfaction since new in 97 on another boat. So this fall, I removed the CDI and will be installing the Profurl in the Spring. Good Luck

I am currently using a hunter 25 with an older profurl unit that came with the boat. I have to say Im very happy with the furlers performance. its never jammed on us and has been very reliable. For performance reasons, weve been debating weather to go back to a wire headstay with hanked on jib. Im not sure, but Im just wondering if anyone has witnessed a true speed or handeling boost from furler to wire on a boat that small befor?
