roller furling questions on O25

My '76 O'Day 25 is new to me this season, and equipped with a Schaefer roller furling system. Previous smaller boats I've sailed have always had hanked on jibs, so roller furling will be a brand new experience for me. I think I've figured out how it works, but don't yet understand the purpose of two hooks which extend off the top of the spinning swivel that's shackled to the jib halyard. Any advice from folks with experience with older Schaefer furling systems? Any general advice on dealing with roller furling would also be apreciated. Thanks!

If your hooks spin with the drum. It is likely that you would use them a your tack. This would be like your hooks for your reefing point on the mainIf there are two I would say that you have space for two head sails. This would be so that you could change head sails while under way.I have a CDI brand furler that uses a halyard and a smaller line for the tack, both however are attached to the drum. With the CDI the foil put the tention on the sail, not a halyard going over the mast. The halyard on mine goes through a sheave in the top of the foil extrusion and back down to the drum where it is tied off. Now I have a conventional jib halyard over the masthead that doesnt get to play.Seth Dixon Quiet Time 77 Oday 25

Another option

Another option to consider - Instead of messing around, trying to familiarize with yet ANOTHER piece of new equipment, you COULD just revert your '25 to a hank on jib system.In the interest of promoting both the sport, and my brand of boat, I'd be more than happy to arrainge a trade for my 76 O'Day 25's more familiar, reliable, easy to learn and use hank-on system in exchange for your mechanical, more difficult, more unfamiliar roller furling system.I'm just that kinda guy.
