Roller furling question

Is the diameter of the round (wire?) sewn into the leading edge of the jib the same on all systems?

Or do I need to know this when ordering or buying sails?

No . it's referred to luff tape size .Number 6 I believe is the most common . This is based on the boats size .
A good sailmaker will need to know for sure .

I am looking at a used jib and want make sure I am armed with good info

When I had to buy a new furler, I had the local sailmaker come out to measure the new one and alter the genoa. He had to remove the previous luff tape and sew on a new one. (Wrong size for new furler.) About $600. (He also patched a few holes and loose sunbrella strips.)

If you still have the genoa that fit, try to get the diameter of the cord in the luff tape.

The size of the luff tape required is not necessarily dependant on the size of the boat, but rather the model of the furler you are installing. Also, you might consider having a foam or rope luff tape installed instead of just the rope luff as that will enhance the shape of the sail if it is partially reefed. Most furling systems are designed to be reefed to suit the apparent winds. Some furler systems are NOT designed to be partially furled (so check the unit for details).

Check your furler specs. I have a unit 1 furler.

For example a Harken MKIV
Luff Tape Size
Units 0 to 4 require #6 (6/32" or 5 mm) luff tape.
