Roller Furling ID Help...

Hi Guys,

I know I don't own an Oday anymore, but I've learned tp rely on your knowledge to help me through jams and I have another one that I need your help with.

The new boat has a broken drum on the roller furling and all of the markings are worn off. I can't firgure out who made the thing, making it very difficult to find a replacement part. The boat is a 1984 Catalina C-27, I'm guessing the roller furling is of the same vintage.

Can anyone tell me what make and model the pictured roller furling is?

Furling System

I have a 1984 CDI and it doesn't look like yours. Don't know where the break is but believe it or not I have repaired a Kubota tractor radiator with Gorilla Glue and it has held for over two years. The top filler cap broke off and it is still on. You could also use glass or Dynel and epoxy if it is the drum, it might be worth a try if you don't find the mfgr. for parts.

I spent a bit of time googling and image searching without any luck. Looks like it is too old to be anyone's current design.

I see the bit that is broken, I'm assuming you don't have the missing piece? Is it mission critical, or could you just smooth the broken edges and let it go?

Interesting looking "swivel shackle" at the bottom. Hahahaha "MacGyver was here"

I agree with Jim. You may be able to Mickey Mouse that drum to get it back into serviceable condition again. I'll forward the pictures that you sent me to my friend Wayne who is a genius when it comes to tinkering. He may come up with some kind of a solution. The plastic knobs on my forward hatch are broken and I'm going to try to come up with a solution to it, rather than replace the hatch.

Make a picture and take a walk

Make a picture, hard copy of your post and take a walk up and down sailboat docks. My thought was it is missing an outside cover which identified the unit. So while looking, look behind the coverings. Look closely at older CDI's, Hood's, and other old time models. The horn cleats and their location may be the identifier.

Of course the easy thing to do is buy a brand new roller furling that will work.

I'm sure that I can make something to patch it together, but I was hoping to keep things original. With no boat in the water I'm just trying to set-up my winter projects and play with the new boat. One thing for sure, sitting on a boat in a parking lot just doesn't cut it for me. I MISS SAILING! Geez, I should have waited until September to list my 23.

Your photo looks like the CDI that came on my OD25. I'm across the bay in Riverside and the boats on the mooring in the cove if you need to take a look.

Success at last...

Thanks for the offer Tom, but I just got a call-back from the service manager at CDI yesterday, it is a mid 80's design CDI. The bad news is that it's no longer in production. The good news is that they do make a replacement aluminum drum assembly.

I really do Love the new boat, but I'm sick over being land locked for the rest of the season. Last week I took the family to the shore to have clamcakes and chowder. As I sat watching dozens of sailboats gliding bye in the perfect breeze, my phone rang. It was the new owner of my Oday-23, he was calling from the helm to ask a few sailing questions. What timing, I felt like I was just kicked in the butt. Oh well, it's only another nine months until the 27 is splashed. I've waited that long for my three kids to be born, I guess I can wait that long for this one too.

Plastic knobs reply

I really haven't figured out what I'm going to do about the knobs yet, but if I come up with something I'll post it. It's not just the knobs, but also the plastic tabs that hold the bolts with the small pins. I was looking at the hatch on Wayne's Seaward 22 just this morning at the club dock, and his hatch is very similar to the one on our boats, but it's made a little better. I don't think that his hatch was made by the same company. It's a little smaller than ours, but the knobs fold right up tight against the inside cover, so you never have to worry about them breaking. The bolts on ours have short pieces of clear plastic hose that is supposed to keep the knobs up and protect them from breaking in the event that the wind blows the cover down when you're on a run. They're just a cheap junky hatch, but I haven't seen a Bomar Hatch that was made any better than the one we have. Also, the Bomars Hatches don't come with a square ring that goes around the flange on the inside. Wayne's hatch is secured to his cabin with wood screws, whereas, our hatch is bolted. I suppose that a Teak frame could be installed inside the cabin, and a new hatch could be screwed to it from outside though. The Bomar that I tried on my boat years ago, was about an 1/8" too small for the opening on my boat. I brought it back to Defender and put my old hatch back on.
