Hi folks, an earlier post made me wonder...is there a roller furler system out there that would stand up to the rigors of going up and down several times a year? I am trailer sailing an Oday 22, however this would apply to most trailering boat. Thanks in advance! Jack Hart

As Dave posted CDI makes what is called a flex furler, in lieu of aluminum extrusions the CDI uses a molded plastic shaft that can take more abuse.

Flex furler without a sail
Is so flexible it's scary! I unfortunately cracked mine somehow between the last pack-up, the 350 mile trek from philly to rochster, or setting up the mast in the dark, on the water. Most likely #3. I ground the crack out and laid fiberglas over the spot, has been working fine? I havent really heard any opinions on repairing the extrusions. Surey says: don't step your mast with the boat in the water in the dark with just a flashlight. You might break something and you just might leave a bungee cord around the mast partway up "hmm..why is the mainsail stuck...DAMN" oops

CDI on my 260
goes up and down almost every weekend for the last 3 years no problem. I leave my sail furled on it and the top connection to the mast connected when trailering. Just make sure you bungee it to the mast carefully so you dont pinch it or let it flop around when trailering. George made a cradle for his furler out of 3 inch PVC pipe. I just bungee mine to the mast along with the gin pole to support the front of the furler.

Hi folks, looks like the CDI is the ticket! To the one that asked why my concern...a friend that was aparrently used to the aluminum extrusion type and did not know about the CDI (Has been a stinkpotter for a while now) had concerns about it going up and down on a regular basis. Thanks again! Jack

Also check out the Schaefer SnapFurl. I had one on an Ericson 23 with a tabernacled mast that had to go down and up twice everytime I went out (because of a bridge) and I had no problems with it. I like that the SnapFurl uses the jib halyard to tension the jib. The CDI uses an internal halyard within the foil and you can't easily adjust the luff tension on the jib. I think the Schaefer is a bit more robust also.

My 2006 Hunter 25 has a hood flex furler
Hood also makes a flex furler. Like the other ones, you just have to handle it with care when trailering. I use lots of white electrical tape to keep it from flopping around. Since it is actually a bit longer than the mast itself, I also have a broomstick that supports it on the front end of the mast when it is down. Again, just tape it and the broomstick to the mast and go.
