I want to replace the roller furling (jib) on my Catalina 30 as it is getting really hard to wind and unwind. Anybody have any suggestions on a good economical replacement? I'm not handy enough to do it myself so I'll have to pay a rigger to put it up, so ease of installiation isn't an issue with me. Thanks in advance.

Have you tried cleaning?

I had the same problem and thoroughly flushing with fresh water did the job. My friendly rigger suggested NOT to grease it (assuming you sail in salt water...) because salt crystals get into the grease forming a sticky gunk. His advice is to frequently flush with fresh water. It worked for me... Otherwise check the recent archives, there have been some suggestions a few months ago regarding good furlers. Good luck.

Agree with Edward, try flushing drum bearings

with freshwater, many use "Torlon" or "Marlon" plastic bearings which actually get stickier if greases are used. A dry lube like "Sailkote" is usually recommended. I'd also bring down the swivel to clean and lube. Furlers can also be affected by the halyard tension.
