I have a 1976 25 and would like to convert my hanked jib to a roller furling system for safety and ease of single handing. I would guess that there will be many opinions regarding which brand is best, but please make your recommendation regarding brand, and state your criterion used for selection. The HOOD furler gets my reccommendation
When I got caught in a 40 knot blow, my Schaffer Luff wire furler bound up and couldn't furl the jib. I vowed to replace it and did a lot of research before going with the HOOD furler. I installed it myself (ALWAYS replace your forestay - you never see it again after installation!) and it was great! Completely trouble-free and the best value. Bill on STARGAZER

I also have a 76 O'Day 25 (fin keel) and had a harken installed at the start of last season. The final oulay of cash was pretty close to $2000 by the time the sail was altered and everything was installed. I am very happy with how it worked out and although I really am a traditionalist my wife and kids sure appreciate me being in the cockpit instead of on the bow in changing wind conditions. good luck

We have a 27' O'Day that we are adding a CDI furling system to this year. I took my foresail over to Bill at Doyle Sails in Traverse City to have it cut. If you go with the CDI, you may wish to buy it from Rudy at D and R Marine (best price for this sytem that I saw) and then take it to Doyle. They will help you set the system up before you take it to the boat for installation.

Harken Unit 0
We went with the Harken Unit 0. We purchased this unit from pyacht.com as a complete kit for about $1400. We found this to be one of the nicest units out on the market, and have not had any problems with it. We did the installation ourselves. Measure twice, cut once! You don't want to goof if your are going to do your own installation. If you feel you are mechanically inclined, go for it. The instructions are very well written, but you should go over them a few times before doing anything. You can also look at the Harken Unit 00AL, but we felt the Unit 0 was a bit beefier. I don't mind when the weather gets heavy, so I wanted the heftier unit for the extra money. Michael Gordon Overkill

I just installed the CDI FF4 with Ball bearings to with a new 150 Genny. It is as smooth as silk and it is BEAFY. The instructions were good and I had it on in no time. I also used the Harken furling line kit to run the the fuling line aft and installed a cleat where the terminating loop on the combing for the life line would be if I had no rear pulpit.
