Several rigging shops are giving me a $2500.00 estimate for a turnkey furling system. Has anyone done their own and was it difficult? Does anyone have info on the CDI Flexible furl, priced at $655 to $755. Or Schaefer Snapfurl, about a $1000.00. This is for a Catalina 27 TR. I don't race but do sail in bad WX. Thanks, Grant

CDI install

I"m on my second boat with a CDI furler. They are well made and easy to install.Be absolutely sure of your forestay length before you cut it.You can install ityourself with out taking down the mast.

CDI is a good choice

I put a CDI on my C 27, it took an afternoon. I think that your prices are going to be higher than $755.

CDI Furler should be just fine.

I would think that the CDI would work out just fine on the 27. I had one on my Catalina 30, which i thought was REALLY pushing it. I had aluminum extrusions, but the drum was a CDI. When the wind kicked up, the smaller drum diameter made it harder to furl in. But there is a big difference between the 27 and the 30 in sail area.BTW, i had a 150 on it.

Like our CDI. Easy to install and very affordable. Call D&R Marine (www.drmarine.com). Rudi's price on CDI is very reasonable.

I found a used one

A local yacht club has an annual rummage sale. I found a used system for $75 and paid a friend $240 to install it. Now we're getting real lazy and I'm loving it. Being a cruiser, not a racer, has made this a very sweet deal. My 150 already had luff tape and a Sunbrella UV edge. I'm adding slides and Sunbrella to my 135 and 100 for backups. Did it myself

I installed a Hood system on my boat. Wouldn't be my first choice if $$ were not an object, but the price and ease of install were good. It was about $600 6 years ago.

CDI

On my Catalina 30 tall rig 1983 I replaced my old CDI reefer with the new CDI flexable furler last winter with the boat out of the water and the mast in a rack storage in the marina. I found it the most difficult part was bringing the furler from my house to the yard. I wanted to do the hard work in the relatively warm basement and transport the assembled system to the yard about 1.5 miles away. We jury rigged the assembly out the sunroof of an suv and back in the tailgate. You must be careful when you cut the furler as it is a one shot deal and I had to take the wire halyard to my marina to be nicopressed which CDI doesn't tell you. Some have said they did this with the boat in the water and the mast up. I don't think I would want to. The new CDI worked great last season.

Check out Hood

I self installed a Hood Seafurl 707 3 years back on my CS 27. It fits right over your existing headstay and turnbuckle, no cutting or mods required. Price in my area was comparable to a CDI FF6 with BBs.

another vote for CDI

My son and I installed one on a 22' Glouchester. As someone said earlier, really think through how the furler works and be careful that you cut the foil to the right length. There was an error in the instructions ( Idon't remember the details) and had I followed them to the letter, I would have cut the foil too short. Installation was easy and it is the best furler for the money in my opinion.

Go aloft?

Thanks everyone for the help. Timm, did you have to go aloft to install the CDI? Grant

Not Tim but,

I found it easier to measure and install the CDI with the mast down. I removed the headstay and took it home where I could make measurements in the comfort of my basement (No wind). If you leave the mast up, you could use a 50' cloth tape attached to your jib halyard for measuring the foresty length and Once the foil is cut, there should be no problem installing the furler with the mast up without going aloft. The foil simply slides over the forestay and it is a single piece that you would push up from the bottom. Once the foil is up, you simply slip the drum over your forestay turnbuckle onto the bottom of the foil and you're pretty much done. CDI's website used to provide on-line instructions so you can look at the project before you commit to buying. Their technical support was also very helpful. Good Luck
