I am taking delivery this month of a 1987 28.5 and would like to add roller furling. Are there certain manufacturers to narrow my search to? Any models to avoid? What type of modifications do I need done to the jib and genoa? Any tips and suggestions would be appreciated.... my email address is brtaylor@nortelnetworks.com

Furlex

I installed a Furlex furler on my 28.5 two years ago. It works very well. The only drawback is they are expensive. The unit was around $1800 Cdn. and I also had to pay to have it installed. If you are interested in a particular brand, post it on this site. There are also lots of old posts in the archives on furlers. You will also have to have luff tape sewn onto your sails. This tape fits into the groove on the furler. Hope this is of some help. Dave McIlveen "Osprey"

Furling Advice

I replaced an older Hood with Schaefer and am very satisfied. Make sure the installation is done by a competent and knowledgeable professional, beacause the fittings and measurements need to be precise. Incidentally the Schaefer is a few hundred less than Furlex
