I would like to get opinions about a roller furler for my 26. I live in central Kentucky and do not not have access to saillofts without mail order. Can I use my current jib? How easy are they to get up and down for trailoring? Any web sites with pics would be great. My boat is in the driveway for the winter now! thanks all..

Roller Furler Plus/Minus

I have the CDI roller furler on my H26. Love it for sailing. Hate it when it comes time to step and unstep the mast. If you trailer sail, then I'd advise against it. If you leave it in all season, as I do, then go for it. For the 26 I don't believe you have to alter the jib, but you do have to shorten the forestay. Also, below the furling drum there need to be two 6" linkplates. They are used to get the drum to clear the deck. The CDI model I have on my 97 H26 was called the FF3H26, specifically because of these modifications to the normal FF3. Ron Mehringer s/v Hydro-Therapy

John, you will need to modify the jib for furling.

The luff of the jib will have to have the hanks removed and luff tape for the furler sewn into the luff. You also should consider some kind of sun protection for the furled sail. Talk to your supplier of the furler as they should be able to help you. Bob s/v Gravyboat

Roller Furling

I have a H240 and only trailer and Ron is right that it is a bit of a pain BUT that is out weighed every time i pull that string and the jib appears, dissappears or even better is reefed! I have a CDI very very simple and reliable. I bungy the drum to the front rail when raising and lowering the mast, this keeps my hands free and stops it from getting away from me, which used to do. The sun protection should not be a big deal if you trailer and take the sail off (I do). good luck

Sailrite

The link below is for do-it-yourselfers who want to adapt a jib for roller furling. It's worth a look even if you hire a loft; it gives a provides a good understanding of the process, and of how the modifications affect sail shape. The rest of the Sailrite website is worth exploring as well. They impart a lot of useful info for free, and have a lot of useful stuff for sale, too.

Modify the jib

Bob - You are right on the mark about what needs to be done to the jib. I had my blinders on and was only thinking about whether or not it needs to be recut. Ron Mehringer s/v Hydro-Therapy PS - Bob, did you notice my new home port? I am LOVING Barnegat Bay!

Ron, I noticed.

The Bay is a little cold this time of year. My boat is dry docked for the winter and I will be heading to Florida this friday. I will be driving down with a friend and his H26 to Punta Gorda. He will leave the boat, after spending a couple of weeks there, and will return for it in March. I guess that means I will have to sail it this winter just to keep it in shape for his return. Somebody has to do this dirty work so it might as well be me. Bob s/v Gravyboat

Be careful in Virginia. They will pull you over if there is no trailer tag on the trailer. Make sure your friend knows this. Wish i was going with you but I have to work otherwise I would stick my thumb out to hitch a ride. One question. Have you ever sailed at night during the winter in a snow storm. I have on several occassions and it was beautiful with the snow against the sails. My wife thought I was crazy. Henze the nick name. Crazy Dave Condon

Damn. Just when I though I had one up on you, you tell me you'll be sailing in Florida. Lucky dog! Ron Mehringer s/v Hydro-Therapy

Dave & Ron

Thanks for the travel advice Dave. You know you are always welcome and if you ever get down to Florida this winter, let me know. We may be able to get a ride in or two. I have done a lot of night sailing but never in a snow storm. Sounds great but a little wet and cold. Ron, I guess I will see you next year. Maybe for a sail on the Bay. Good luck to all and have a happy and safe holiday. Bob s/v Gravyboat
